Rock-n-Roll Journal

here's a quick update on our old friend and founding lux liner chad edgington. he started law classes last week at texas tech university in lubbock, texas. he said people are really smart and the professors talk fast but are surprisingly patient. an average day starts at the library at 8 a.m. and he reads until class time. class is fast-paced and the professors start right on time. people are told to never leave class unless they are dying because you never see a lawyer leave to get a drink during a trial. then he gets a lunch break and usually goes home, eats, and reads assinged law cases. at this time he also checks his email and catches up on the latest gossip at god made fried chicken.

after lunch he heads back to the library to read until class time. goes to his next class, then hits the library again until dinner time. when he's at the library he's reading cases and making outlines of the cases. not because it's homework, just becasue he's expected to "know" about all these different cases during class discussion. i guess this is the kind of knowledge he'll need to know when faced with his own cases.

after he and melissa eat some dinner and talk about each other's days, he retires to his "office" (the second bedroom) to read cases and make outlines. at my house, the second bedroom is called the "music room". by the way, melissa is teaching middle school english at a pretty nice school in the lubbock school district.

so the law student is pretty busy but he still finds time for fun. it only took him a week to land a gig performing as elvis in a new weekly musical this fall. today he was even interviewed and sang on a the local news show. soul bandit sloth lives about twenty miles from lubbock so he was able to watch the new cast. here's his report.

Chad was good! He had to answer questions live from the news anchor lady and then sang "Heartbreak Hotel". The sound came across well and his black suit with a white tie looked sharp. It was great. I have a recording of it, I will try to send it to you.

so chad has quickly established himself as the premier elvis impersonator in lubbock. i'm not surprised. anyone that witnessed any early luxury liner shows (the old three hour sets) knows that chad does a good elvis.i just wanted to take a minute to fill people in on what's going on with "ace" edgington. it's good to know that he's once again under the bright lights on friday and saturday nights. rock on book worm!

whoa, my sleepy hero elliot smith has grown some willie nelson braids. i wonder if he has a red, white, and blue guitar strap too? maybe i should go for this look too?

we played two songs on monday night at 12th and porter in nashville. we hadn't played at their writer's night thing in quite a while. we decided to play "waiting for the sun" and "fifteen again". i think people liked it. no one was screaming and singing along like when jetpack plays there, but we were good. larry even broke a string on the last song so i guess that means we were rocking! right after our songs i strapped on the bass and played two songs with verde. we had drummer brian again playing with us again so it was rocking. some music "biz" people wanted to talk to andrea so that was funny. liners are maxing and relaxing right now. hopefully we'll get some new songs out of our break.

looks like there's a big war going on between my lunch time favorite, God made fried chicken, and the new midget site below. this could get ugly.

i'm from texas and i thought i'd seen some pretty funny stuff come out of the country. this beats it all. (link courtesy of midgets make good cowboys).

our show on sunday night was pretty fun. we only played eight songs so it was energy packed. i still managed to say plenty of dumb stuff between the songs. it felt really good to be back on the 12th and porter stage again. especially with the new three piece configuration. we wore the blue name shirts. oh yea, for those of you keeping score, we won on sunday night as usual.

here's the setlist.
1. it's you
2. fifteen again
3. shake it up
4. new beginning
5. waiting for the sun
6. crash and burn
7. waiting game
8. believe (cher)

Friday, August 10

the show last night at the basement was really fun. the club is totally new so everything was extra clean and nice. it's pretty small too so the vibe was intimate and relaxed. i even got to play through a vox amp. so i was feeling like john lennon or something up there. we wore the boy scout uniforms and were surprised to find that two real eagle scouts were in the audience. several local rock stars were also present. a good time was had by all. we even saw the ghost of freddy mercury. oh yea, the opening band was really good. reminded me of the old days of being a lux liner.

here's the set list.

fifteen again - the power went out right after this one. we lost "ted" our secret bass guitar weapon. larry somehow resusitated him but he was never the same.
new beginning - "that's right, reach how, just try"
will you - this is a verde cover. i realized andrea wasn't even there yet so i had someone from the audience call her.
equasue - scott's new harmony song.
woman - i tricked the guys and started this one sooner than expected so they wouldn't laugh at me. for some reason we always laugh before this one. hmm, maybe becasue it's o cheesy.
the duke of gloucester - this was a request from the audience and we were happy to try it.
it's you - "i always knew that it would happen"
we will rock you - impromtu queen cover
baby blue - spicy foxymoron song.
waiting for the sun - we did the new rock intro of this one.
shake it up - yea!
blockbuster - yet another audience request.
crash and burn - this one felt good last night. for some reason i couldn't keep my eyes open while singing it.
waiting game - rock out ending.

jackson, thanks for the link. they all look so greasy? i like that model he married. she's a real plain jane. could ben lee's face be any longer? he's the jay leno of indie rock. sorry i had to split last night. how's business?

man, i'm glad you got "come on feel". that's the album that got me hooked. i remember going to the store in the fall of 1993 and trying to decide between that album or gin blossoms. i had been kinda curious since i loved the evan dando song on my victoria williams "sweet relief" benefit album. (i only bought that album because it had pearl jam singing crazy mary on it.) i had $15 credit to spend at one of those cheesy music stores at the mall. man oh man, am i ever glad i got that album. i was instantly OFF of pearl jam and alice in chains grunge and STUCK on the lemonheads. i could sing all the songs and play all the chords. i was in heaven! plus i liked the music. i'm not a serious guy like eddie vedder. i'm a shallow fluff like evan dando. what took me so long? then i got "it's a shame about ray". awesome! then the summer of 1994 when i was a lifeguard i got an acoustic bootleg album from cd world. one guy, his guitar, and his songs. their was no turning back. i had rock-n-roll fever! that was the magic summer of the foxymorons and tripping deweys. it was a blast. jerry james, jason clark, craig hinkle, and myself locked away in the church's college class room learning chords, songs, and how to be a band. we had no idea how to do anything. our gear was pathetic but we were on a mission to become rockers!
